Tokyo Comic Con 2025 kicked off with a grand opening ceremony on December 5, 2025, transforming Chiba’s Makuhari Messe into the epicenter of global pop culture. Hosting an unprecedented roster of international A-listers, the 9th edition of the three-day convention proved to be its most ambitious yet.
From the second the lights dimmed on the main stage, the energy of thousands of fans set the tone for a monumental weekend.
A Star-Studded Welcoming Committee
The opening ceremony was expertly steered by Japanese TV personality Yuichi Nakamaru, who served as the main stage MC alongside co-host LiLiCo. Welcoming the Hollywood elite to Japanese actors were local icons, including official event ambassador and actor-singer Koji Yamamoto, acclaimed director and actor Tadanobu Asano, and popular PR ambassador and cosplayer Moe Iori. Together, they set the stage for a spectacular roll-call of global icons that had fans roaring with excitement.
The Avengers, Wizards, and Time Travelers Invade Tokyo
The true highlights of the ceremony were the celebrity introductions, drawing a superstar lineup from Hollywood’s biggest franchises.
• Sebastian Stan (Thunderbolts, Captain America) and fantasy favorite Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Fantastic Beasts) commanded the big cheers as they greeted the crowd.
• Back to the Future Reunion sent waves of nostalgia through the hall as Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, and Thomas F. Wilson stepped out on stage together.
•The Walking Dead Universe was well-represented by fan-favorites Norman Reedus and Marvel's The Punisher star Jon Bernthal, who shared an enthusiastic onstage moment.
• Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Christina Ricci (Wednesday), Harry Potter's Evanna Lynch, and Game of Thrones' Pilou Asbæk rounded out the opening panel.

The Traditional Sake Barrel Smash
In Tokyo Comic Con fashion, the opening ceremony reached its climax with the traditional Japanese Kagami Biraki (sake barrel-breaking ceremony).
The international guests lined up across the stage and hold the mallets in hands, alongside their Japanese hosts. They smashed open the wooden barrels to signify good fortune, harmony, and the official opening of the event. Seeing icons like Christopher Lloyd and Sebastian Stan participate in the rich Japanese tradition while smiling ear-to-ear was the ultimate "only at Tokyo Comic Con" memory for everyone in attendance.
With the barrels broken and confetti raining down, Tokyo Comic Con 2025 was officially declared open, kicking off three days of unforgettable autographs, cosplay, and pop-culture bliss.
