KANSAI YAMAMOTO in Fashion Cantata From Kyoto 2025

Kansai Yamamoto , KANSAI YAMAMOTO's designer and brand owner is a Japanese fashion designer known for his avant-garde and flamboyant creations, particularly in 1970s and 1980s. He was the first Japanese designer who had a show in London, Great Britain. He became famous for his collaborations with David Bowie, designing iconic stage costumes for Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane personas. Beyond stage wear, Yamamoto also produced large-scale "super-shows" that combined fashion with music, dance, and other performance elements.

Yamamoto's designs were known for their bold colors, patterns, and theatrical flair, often drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese art and history. Yamamoto embraced the Japanese concept of "basara," which emphasizes extravagance and boldness, as opposed to the more minimalist "wabi sabi" aesthetic.

He created large-scale events that blended fashion with music, dance, and other performances, often in public spaces. After a long career in fashion, he presented his final collection in 1992, before focusing on event production. On 14th June 2025, The Summer collection is presented on the runway with many models led by actress Aoi Yamada and Jazz musician group "Soil & Pimp Sessions" in 31st Fashion Cantata From Kyoto at Kyoto theatre inside Kyoto Station.
