History has been made at the Busan International Film Festival 2026 (BIFF)! For the very first time, Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) has launched its prestigious Country of Honor program, and Thailand proudly takes center stage as the inaugural partner.

The opening reception was a spectacular celebration of cross-border creativity, co-hosted by Ministry of Culture (Thailand), Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP). The event brought together influential heavyweights shaping the future of Asian cinema. 

Key figures spotted driving this monumental collaboration include Park Kwang-su, President of  BIFF, alongside Thailand’s representative and Bangkok international Film Festival (BKKIFF) programmer Donsaron Kovitvanitcha. Joining them in welcoming the global delegation was Ellen Y.D. Kim, the visionary Market Director of ACFM, who has been instrumental in spearheading the market's global expansion.

Under the theme “Reimagining Thailand,” this  partnership bridges Thailand's content with ACFM’s world-class market networking. From high potential original IPs ready for international remakes to dynamic global co-productions, Thai cinema is officially entering a new chapter on the global stage.

Leading the glamorous Thai delegation was "Donsaron Kovitvanitcha", Bangkok International Film Festival director, alongside "Yasushi SHIINA", TIFFCOM CEO, Executive Adviser of UNIJAPAN during the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFFJP)  

The event also welcomed prominent figures who driving the Thai creative industry, including "Mook" Minrayaporn and Khun chai "Adam" (M.R.W. Chalermchatri Yukol) - former executive of THACCA, "Madiew" Chookiat Sakveerakul, film director (Love Of Siam, Dew) and President of Thai Film Directors Association, "Pep" Noppasit Thiengtham, President of Thai BL Series Association. 

Official representatives from Thailand government "Ministry of Culture" were also in attendance to support Thai soft power on the global stage, along with Thai entrepreneurs including "Roger" - Phairoj Tewinburanuwong and "Ou" Suchada Busaracumwong from Themework Studio (Dating Game The Series), among many other VIP guests.

Spotted in the crowds making major moves: Taiwanese film director Hao-hsuan YEN, Italian visionary filmmaker Salvatore Lizzio, and the brilliant Gimi KIM! From groundbreaking international co-productions to the evolution of AI in filmmaking, the energy was absolutely electric as boundaries between Eastern and Western cinema completely dissolved.

Hao-Hsuan YEN is an emerging Taiwanese film director and screenwriter. He is known for blending rationality with strong emotional resonance in his stories. His work often captures complex human relationships and showcasing the humor and absurdity of daily life.

Salvatore Lizzio, an Italian film producer and director is renowned for his dedication to creating culturally engaged films. His films was selected as one of the featured Italian producers for the Alpi Film Lab and the Locarno Film Festival's program. He is known for having produced films such as "Body Odyssey", "A Man Fell" which was in competition at Giornate degli Autori (during the Venice Film Festival), "100 Preludi" in Shanghai international Film Festival (China) and Sguardi Altrove Film Festival in Milan.

39th TIFF to Open with Sukiyaki and Close with Colony; Centerpiece is Godzilla Minus Zero

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is  to announce three spotlight screenings that will occur during the 39th edition. The festival’s Opening Film will be Sukiyaki, a heartwarming music-themed entertainment revealing the untold story behind “Sukiyaki”— the historic song that topped the Billboard charts and remains one of the world’s best-selling tunes.

The Centerpiece will be Godzilla Minus Zero, the epic sequel from the Oscar-winning Visual Effects team behind Godzilla Minus One, showcasing the next evolution in the global Godzilla phenomenon. It is the first Japanese production to be filmed for Imax.

The TIFF Closing Film will be the Korean non-stop action-thriller Colony, directed by Yeon Sang-ho of Train to Busan (2016). The film, depicting a desperate struggle for survival against infected hosts driven by an advanced collective intelligence, had its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and swept the box office in Korea and other Asian countries. 

With a rich variety of genres—drama, tokusatsu, and action-thriller—these three films headline this year’s festival lineup. We hope you will enjoy these films and many others in the heart of Tokyo this autumn, as the 39th TIFF unspools, from October 26 to November 4, 2026.

เทศกาลภาพยนตร์นานาชาติโตเกียว (TIFF) ประกาศรายชื่อภาพยนตร์ไฮไลต์ 3 เรื่องที่จะจัดฉายในงานเทศกาลครั้งที่ 39 นี้ โดยภาพยนตร์เปิดเทศกาล (Opening Film) ได้แก่ Sukiyaki (สุกี้ยากี้) ภาพยนตร์แนวอบอุ่น มีดนตรีเป็นแกนหลัก ถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวเบื้องลึกที่ไม่เคยมีใครรู้มาก่อนของเพลงระดับตำนานอย่าง Sukiyaki เพลงที่เคยขึ้นอันดับหนึ่งบนชาร์ต บิลบอร์ดในสหรัฐอเมริกา และยังคงเป็นหนึ่งในเพลงที่มียอดขายสูงสุดตลอดกาลของโลก

Godzilla Minus Zero is a true sequel to Godzilla Minus One, one of the standouts in the Godzilla series, and it brings a powerful new interpretation of Godzilla, delivering a level of surprise that far exceeds expectations. It is a masterpiece that was truly meant to be made in these challenging times.

Colony delivered the greatest excitement and emotional impact among the films at this year’s Cannes. While an overwhelming number of zombie films have been produced, this film makes us realize that the genre still possesses untapped potential.
