It's getting closer to the announcement of the final films that will be nominated for the "Oscars".
Japan film have been making steady progress in the global stage, Japan's 98th Oscars entry film Kokuhō (国宝, National Treasure) as the representative of Japanese film , is spotlighted at 30th Busan International Film Festival.
Ryo Yoshizawa as the lead actor in the film, mentioned about the intensive training he underwent for the film. He revealed that he and his co-star Ryusei Yokohama devoted a year and half to rehearsals, including practicing kabuki dance and movements, followed by 3 months of filming.
He spoke about the difficulty of mastering the traditional art of kabuki in a limited time. He mentioned realizing he couldn't keep up with those who had trained since childhood, but emphasized that the "spirit of clinging to the kabuki" and the perseverance to portray an artist's life is necessary for the film.
Ryo clarified that while he spent a year and half for practicing the Kabuki dance as Onnagata (male performer specializing in female roles), director Lee Sang-il instructed him to focus on conveying the character's emotion rather than just beautiful dancing technique. He also noted that the film was originally made for Japanese audiences who may lack of knowledge about kabuki in their mind, which likely contributed to its positive reception by Korean audience in Busan, South Korea.
Kokuhō has earned over ¥18 billion at the box office in Japan (updated until November 2025), making it one of the highest-grossing live-action Japanese films of all time.
The film depicts the turbulent life of a kabuki actor, has also increased public interested in kabuki, a UNESCO's cultural world heritage from Japan.
